Best Birthday Gifts on a Budget

If you're a parent or relative to young children, then you've got birthdays to attend. For me, it's almost every weekend these days! Finding the appropriate gift can be time-consuming, and a bit stressful- whether it's coming directly from you or from your child to their pal.

I am one of those aunts that lives 600 miles from my nieces and nephews, and I have quite a few of them.  I want to buy them all age appropriate gifts on a budget but since I only see them a few times a year, that can be difficult.  I am also really busy with getting my kids back into school, so I don't have a lot of time to shop for all those fall birthdays.

Never fear! I created a gift guide so you can focus on enjoying time with loved ones (and getting on with your day!) rather than hemming and hawing at all of the options. And while Fall birthdays have been top of my mind, the gift guide is appropriate for any time of year so you can bookmark this page as your gift that keeps on giving. The gifts are organized by age group from toddler to teen, and all of them are under $40. Happy gifting!

Math Made Easy for Kids

Math can be quite the 4 letter word, but with the right curriculum it becomes an amazing tool that unlocks the world around us. Whether you want to admit it or not, we all use math in our everyday life. We can’t even cook a recipe without math; check a bill for accuracy or many other everyday tasks. I am a nurse as well as a mom, and I use math at work. Simple math can become second nature for a lot of us and a good foundation is the key.

During the summer when my kids are at home, I plan lessons for them so that they do not get rusty and forget their math skills, so you don’t have to be a homeschooling mom to check out the link below. Looking for a comprehensive homeschool math curriculum catered to your child's learning style? I've got the Fab 5 of tried-and-true homeschool curricula for beginners up to college, and from mastery to story-based. Now it's just a process of elimination.

Yes, I had a Narcissist for a mom. My story.

I started this blog because I want to help support and encourage moms and women who want to be moms.  I had to learn to be a mom by myself and it was a hard skill to learn when I had no real role model.  Growing up, I didn't realize my mom was a narcissist.  She is not the flamboyant type to throw me into the public eye and want me to be a star.  She is what I would consider a covert narcissist who likes to hide in the shadows and observe without being seen (so she can talk badly about people).

My mom is the kind of person that gets what she wants at all costs.  If you do something that she is not please with, she will withdraw from your life as punishment.  This is punishment because in her mind, everyone wants to know her and be close to her.  Pushing people away is a game.  I saw her cut off relationships with her best friend and her sister with no remorse.  She felt that both women were in a competition with her and they were winning, so they had to pay by not having her in their life.

Growing up, I knew that I had to do everything my mom wanted to or pay, but I never once suspected she was so evil and could cut her grand kids and me out of her life so coldly.  It all started one fall.  My mom watched my nieces every weekend, even though she never once babysat my kids even for an hour.  In my mom's world, there was nothing wrong with this.  Playing favorites is how a person gets what they want.  The least favorite has to work hard to gain approval and feed the ego of the narcissist.  My family was planning on making the 600 mile trip when she informed me that having my three kids in her house was too much, that we needed to find a hotel.  I reminded her that she has three kids at her house every weekend and I guess it made her mad.  We decided to spend Christmas at our home instead and we didn't make the trip back.  Having all the kids in a hotel room was more than I could handle.  No place to nap, two beds and a crib in a small space.  We decided we should stay home.

I honestly don't know what happened next.  I found out from someone that my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.  I called the house and left message after message.  She never returned a call.  I knew she felt it was powerful not to answer my calls.  I could feel her smirking as I spoke to her voicemail.  At first, I called her voicemail daily.  Then I started leaving her voicemails on Saturdays.  Eventually I gave up.  I phoned her and said that for me to continue talking to an answering machine was pitiful, and that she would need to call me back.  She didnt.

I don't really know what I did.  I guess I never will.  Two years later, I was in my hometown for Christmas.  I was shopping and ran into someone from my parent's church who asked me how my dad was doing.  I decided to be honest.  I said I did not know how he was doing, that I had done something to upset them and they had not spoken to me in over 2 years.  I said I didn't know how someone could call themselves a christian and not talk to their own grand kids.

Big Mistake. Calling out a narcissist who believes themselves to be perfect is the worst thing I could have ever done.  From that point on, I was a liar.  They were not talking to me because I lied to people about them and I needed to apologize (to their answering machine).  I live 600 miles from my parents and they took "the entire family" on a last vacation with my dad and drove within a mile of my house.  I still cry when I think about that.  My family were posting pictures all over the internet. They knew it was the last vacation they would ever take and they chose to shut us out.  There was no forgiveness in their heart, there was no willingness to talk.

I did give it one last try.  I spoke to a family friend.  She gathered a group of people who knew my parents and prayed.  She said they all prayed for days before she phoned my dad.  Knowing my father to be a christian, I just knew she could get through to him.  I knew he would listen to someone from my childhood church, but my hopes were smashed. She phoned me in tears.  She said she spoke to my dad on the phone and did not even recognize him for the hate in his heart.  She said she tried to talk to him about me, but that he kept saying he refused to talk to me because I was a liar.  She asked him how someone could be a liar by speaking the truth, but she said he kept insisting that I lied to make them look bad to their church.  She said she had never known him to be so unforgiving, so hateful and so mean.  She said she finally decided to try to stop making him see that he was the one lying and asked, "What would your daughter need to do to make you love her again?".  She said that before he slammed the phone down, he said, "Nothing she can do".   Now when people say prayer works, I don't believe them.

A few nights later, I got a call from my sister.  She reprimanded me for involving an "outsider" in a "family" fight.  She said I had no right to involve someone else.  I asked her what I was supposed to do since it had now been nearly four years since our parents had spoken to me and our father was DYING.  She said he was not dying.  She was in total denial and said that she only wanted to hear sunshine and rainbows from me if I ever spoke to her again.  I still don't understand how she could be angry at me for wanting a relationship with my parents.  I knew how my parents felt through my sister's words.  They felt ambushed.  They did not want to talk to me and were not ready, so my effort was met with hostility, not forgiveness.

I was crying one day when I realized something.  If my dad died, my narcissist mom was going to expect me to be at his funeral.  She would decide that I had paid enough for whatever it was that I did to offend her simply because she didn't want people talking about her.  I decided that if my dad was able to talk to me when she made her realization, that I would be open to a reconciliation.  I also made the hardest decision I ever made in my life.  I decided that if she waited until my dad could no longer speak, that I would not acknowledge her or go to his funeral.   It had been over four years and my kids wouldn't even know them if they walked up to us.  How could I point to a dead man and say, "That is your grandpa who wanted nothing to do with you".  I couldn't.

I decided I would only be open to talking to my parents again if BOTH of them could talk and if they wanted to put my kids in their life.  I didn't get a call from my mom.  I got an email.  The day before he died.  Her email to me said, "We aren't mad, but you can apologize now".  It didn't say for what.  I pondered it for a bit, then deleted it.  If they weren't mad, then why had my kids lost a relationship with their grandparents?  Why would I need to apologize if they weren't mad?  It made no sense.  My niece phoned me that night to say that my dad had died.  I didn't call, I didn't send flowers and I didn't answer the mass email my mom sent telling people what time to be there for the funeral.  My sister said, "He made peace with god".  I never told her how hurtful that sentence was.  She said my dad could leave me here on earth crying and hurting, but since he made peace with a god, it was all OK.  My feelings meant nothing to his god.  My God would have said to make every effort to make peace with your family before dying.

I waited a month, then I made the second biggest mistake of my life.  I emailed the woman who gave birth to me and said that I would not be accepting calls or emails from her again.  I told her that what she did was called stonewalling and it is a narcissistic trait and that I would not talk to her or read emails from her again.  I decided that it had been over four years and my kids had mourned their grandparents already.  Why allow her back into my life now?  She stole the last four years of my dad's life from me and my family.  The price I had to pay was too much.  How long before I would have to pay again?  Looking back, I should not have emailed her.  She never bothered to tell me what I had done that so offended her that she cut me and my kids out of her life completely so why would I think that telling her was a good idea?    She shot back an email with "DRAMA QUEEN" as the title, but I didn't read it.  I kept my word and deleted it and blocked her email.

I thought very hard about telling my story and I am crying as I type.  I grew up in a house where you did what my mom wanted to do or you paid the price.  There was abuse, isolation and I lived in a closed off, small world.  I decided to tell my story to encourage other women to be good moms.  I grew up with a bad mom. Not the worst mom ever, but there was no joy in my life. I didn't want that for my kids.  I wanted to be a good mom who brings joy to their lives and who coaches them to be the best they can be.  I had to learn how to be a good mom.  I had to learn to cook and clean and to teach my kids.  I had to learn to raise a family without the abuse that I was subjected to...and I did.  I want that for each and every mom out there.  I want you to grow as a mom.  I want you to enjoy caring for your family and to love each other.  Where you came from is not important in your ability to be a very good mom.  You only need to want to learn to be a good parent and to be willing to put effort into it.  You need to love your kids for who they are and not try to change them.  To help them develop their skills and interests and to help them become successful in finding their path in life. I hope that I can encourage you on your way.

I hope you enjoy my blog and I hope you are able to learn from it.

Why I gave up World of Warcraft and why you should too.

I am a mom.  Everyone knows that moms need a way to blow off some steam after the kids are in bed.  I heard about this really cool game called World of Warcraft.  I got the game and joined a guild and goofed off for a while.  I got to maximum level and figured out a way to make a ton of the stuff called gold.  I then found myself doing something called farming for gold.  I spent a few hours of leisure time every day farming for gold.  My character had everything she could ever want.  If something new came out, I bought it.  I found out there was this thing called gold cap and I wanted to see if it were true so I spent hours making gold.   I was then approached by a guild to see if I wanted to do this thing called raid.  I decided to try it and was addicted.  For the next few years, I was in and out of guilds always trying to have the best gear, spending hour upon hour of my free time at night raiding and additional time during the day farming.

The game has a satisfaction to it.  There are quests that you finish and they pay you gold to finish them.  If you kill a boss, you get good things for your character.  There is always a task available to you that will get you something in the game and the task is clear cut and can be easy or difficult but there is a beginning and an end to each task.  Most tasks are turned in and a new task is given, so there is always plenty to do in the game.

I had game friends.  I knew their real names and a lot about their personal lives, but no matter what I told you at the time, they were not real friends.  I could not go to their house for dinner; I could not go for a walk with them.  I did make some friends that I am still in touch with, but I believe that my time playing this game was wasted time.  I could have been investing my time in charities, making real friends and making my community a better place to live.

I was addicted to this game.  I was addicted to talking to my online friends and raiding with them, spending hour upon hour in a game talking to people who lived halfway across the world from me.  I belonged to a guild at one point that would require you to give your real phone number and an excuse if you were going to miss a raid.  These people told me what to do and I did it.

So you say this is harmless?  I raced through so many real life things trying to make it home in time for raid.  I rushed dinners, nights out with family, nights out with friends, I even turned down parties because I had to raid that night.  I rushed out of my kid’s school functions and made my schedule around a game.   I actually had to attend a meeting one time during the day with my guild because there was an unacceptable amount of time that my dots were not on a raid boss.  I kid you not.  It was like being in the principal’s office at school.

I don’t recall why I decided to leave the first time, but I left.  I think I recall there not being any new content and I was bored.  No one wanted to raid because we had done it all.  There was hardly anyone left on our server because people were jumping ship and quitting.   I think there were six people left in my guild and I decided to go to school.  I was busy studying and I really couldn’t raid and study and the timing was perfect for me to leave.

When I finished my degree, I logged back into the game and was almost immediately snatched up by a guild.  We leveled together and I raced to be the first person in my guild to reach level.  I even took a day off work to do it.  I used a vacation day so my character could be a high enough level to raid.
When I got to max level, my guild started to raid, and immediately I was stricken.  I thought back to all the time wasted in the game and realized there was no way I could play this game and have a real life, a real job and real friends.  I decided to make my real life my real priority.  Friends asked me to go out on to dinner on a raid night, and I went.  I didn’t rush dinner; I didn’t log on that night.  I didn’t play if I had to work the next day because I couldn’t be up until midnight playing and up at 5am for work.  I got called into a meeting for missing too much raid and realized that the game was not for me.  I was no longer the person who had no real life and needed something to fill the void.  I have a full, rich life and I do not need the game.  I was sad about my decision, but I closed my account and have not logged back in since.

So if you play this game, why should you quit?  The game takes all of your social time.   It takes time you could be spending making friends or doing something good for your community.  I do realize that there are some people who have no friends outside of this game, but if you are one of those people, you need to find people in your community that like the same things you like and start doing things with them.   I decided that my family and my friends are my priority and the game was taking those away from me.  This is just like alcohol taking a person’s life away, it IS an addiction.

If you are a person who talks about World of Warcraft as if it is your real life, you are my target audience.  It is time to have a real life with real people who love you.  Join a meetup, go to the library and read a book, go to a convention for a group that interests you or even write a book about your Warcraft addiction.

I wish you a full and successful life in the real world.  You will be amazed at what life is like once you make it offline and acclimate to real world living.  #worldofwarcraft

Summer activities with kids...get them away from that tv!

Summer is here and that means trying to occupy our kids time and keep them away from the tv and the internet.  There are two approaches to this.  The first being to tell the kids no and tell them to find something to do.  The other being to keep them occupied so that they do not miss not having the tv.  I prefer the second.
I love being the house on the block where all the kids congregate, but a few years ago, I noticed some moms taking advantage of the situation.  One mom in particular worked full time and left her 10 year old home with her 16 year old.  The 10 year old would get bored and come to my house as soon as she woke up and stay until her parents got home at 6:30.  This meant I had to feed and entertain her all day long and my grocery bill groaned.  I wanted my kids to have friends over, but not the same friend every single day all day long.  I thought for a really long time about a solution, then I decided that we were to start a “not before noon” rule at our house.   Local kids could not come over until noon.   My kids got up early and ate lunch around 11:30 at the time, so by noon, we had two good meals and they were ready to play with friends.
Our mornings were planned for fun time with our family, or we went places with other friends and their moms.  One day a week, we went to the library and each day that we were home, we had reading time.  We would gather in a room and pick someone to read the book of their choice.  We took turns.  I chose books that were over the kid’s reading level so that I could read books to them that they could not read themselves.  The kids all picked books that were their reading level.  When we finished a harder book, we made a poster or diorama about the book.  We had some good mommy/kid time.
At noon, our friend was always waiting to knock on the door, and we were always happy to share our afternoon snack with her, but I did call her mom and request that she be fed dinner at home.   I was surprised at how well the mom took it.  I was afraid that if I phoned her and said that we were limiting our time with her child that she would become offended, but she said she wanted the kids to be friends and that she had feared too much time together would start arguments among them.  I was so relieved that she felt the same way that I did.
Some of the things we do to limit tv/internet time are going to the park with friends, going to the pool, going to local museums, going to the Wednesday summer movie for kids, taking a day trip to the beach(we live 2.5 to 3 hours from the beach), driving to the state capitol, having picnics at a different park each time we go, going to the library, having outdoor water time, playing bubbles and sidewalk chalk and doing science experiments or cooking together.  #Tuesday #organize

What are your favorite activities?

Emma Francis talks about healthy foods and yukky foods

Did you know that research shows that you can learn to like foods?  What if I told you that in a month you and your family could be enjoying a meal full of vegetables?  Emma Francis is a picky eater.  I grew up with a mom who didn't know how to cook and thought that if you stuck a fork in a vegetable and it didn't slide off into two pieces, it wasn't finished cooking yet.  As a result, I hated vegetables.  I hate any slimy texture and the thought of overcooked vegetables still makes me want to gag.

I went out on my own and decided there is a world full of food out there that isn't spaghetti-O's, but by that time I was such a picky eater that I didn't like anything healthy.  Then one day I was reading a way to get kids to eat vegetables and I decided to give it a try.

At first I was scared.  I was too scared to go for a potent tasting vegetable, so I decided to go for cantaloupe.  I hated it.  The thought of all that orange yuk was disgusting.  The first day, I cut a piece and held my nose and licked it.  That was all I could manage.  I LICKED IT.  I couldn't even stand the thought of putting it into my mouth.  This was not going to work and I knew it, so the second day, I stared at it for ten minutes, then put it into my mouth and practically gagged chewing it.  Even two weeks in, I felt that I would never learn to like melon.  I would eat my piece daily, but I was more than happy to toss the rest out when it went mushy.

I am not exactly sure when the transformation took place.  At some point, I looked down, and the entire half melon was gone and I had enjoyed the sweet flavor of it while I ate it.

So far, I have learned to eat rice, green melon and cantaloupe, broccoli, hummus and onions.  There are probably a few other foods that slip my mind right now.

Currently I am working on beans.  Beans are going to take a while.  I can easily eat a ground up bean, like hummus or a white bean dip, but I cant stand the texture of beans in general.  Right now, I am finding ways to hide them in foods so that I develop a taste for them.  I will smash them and put them into spaghetti sauce or chili.  I even smash them and put them into burritos instead of leaving them whole.  Next, I will stop smashing them in foods.  After I can tolerate them whole, I will work on beans by themselves.

Have you learned to like any food?  How did you do it?
